GNAWA

KHAMLIA VILLAGE, THE OASIS OF GNAWA MUSIC

The Gnawa or Gnaoua are an ethnic and cultural community in Morocco, known for their music and spiritual rituals. They have origins in the populations of sub-Saharan Africa.

Gnawa music is an integral part of the country's culture and is known for its hypnotic rhythms and healing power. It combines elements of African music with spirituality. Gnawa musicians often play instruments such as the guembri (a type of lute), qraqeb (metal castanets) and tbel (a drum).

In ancient times, and still in some places in Morocco, the Gnawa practice a nocturnal spiritual and musical ritual to invoke the spirits and seek healing. On many occasions, one can observe the Gnawa musicians or the attendants entering into a trance. This ritual is believed to have healing and spiritual properties.

With the arrival of Islam, this spiritual practice with the aim of healing has stopped. However, Gnawa music and dance have not been lost and are part of the cultural and traditional wealth of the country. For the Moroccan community, this group of musicians cannot be missing at any celebration or festivity!
